Chapter 11
She left in the early hours of the morning while her sister and parents still slept.
Margot knew that she was making the best decision for both her and Lucille, but that didn’t help her feel any less rotten about it.
That look on Lucille’s face.
Her disappointment had been palpable.
What else was Margot supposed to do? Taking Lucille along would have been cruel in and of itself. She had to be rational and keep a level head for the both of them. Lucille simply couldn’t keep up. And Margot wasn’t going to put her through the stress of whatever journey they were supposed to go on.
Then, there were also their parents’ threats looming over their heads. By leaving without Lucille, Margot was doing her a favor. They wouldn’t send her away if her most corrupting influence was gone.
Margot kept Freddie in her backpack. She didn’t want to cause a commotion throughout the town on her way out. As soon as she was able to hit the forest, she planned on releasing him. Until then, she had to deal with carrying an oversized handbag stuffed with an extra shirt and pants, some canned goods she’d bought from the general store, two changes of underwear, the pan lid, and a spare pair of moccasins.
Her shoulder ached from the weight of her inventory. Margot stuffed her bag to the brim as much as she could, remembering that everything she’d stacked inside of it would have to be transferred over to her backpack.
She picked up a new pair of scissors from the workshop, along with an awl that could serve as a decent backup weapon. Ideally, she’d buy a whole new set of weapons when she reached the next town. Even though she counted as a Psionic, everyone in Patchwork Town knew her as an NPC. With the recent fervor about Hackers, she wanted their assumptions to stay that way.
The scissors and awl were placed in carrying cases attached to her belt. Her feet were clad in thick leather boots that she’d worked on herself. The leather pouch she used for carrying potions remained empty. Renier Van James’ store hadn’t been opened when she went by, so she couldn’t stock up on more.
Also inside of her bag were her mother’s notebook, a quill, a small jar of ink, and a few ripped-out pages from a random book. Judith’s words would be her guide on her journey ahead. By the time Margot returned back home, she planned on being close to Judith’s level.
There was little doubt in Margot’s mind that present day Judith would be double, if not triple the level she was when she wrote about herself. Margot settled for aiming for Level 20.
Margot was nearing the fence that separated the wild woods from Patchwork Town when someone whistled for her attention. She turned to see who it was, and then turned right back around.
“My, my, that’s no way to treat a friend,” Wolfgang, the ghostly man, said. He stood in a small crowd with the rest of his Psionic crew.
